Livestock Development in Badia region, Jordan
Dr. Memon assisted the The National Centre for Research & Development (NCRD) in assessing the current veterinary services and practices available in the Badia region and provided recommendations for future projects to improve veterinary services.
Livestock diseases are one of the most important constraints affecting the development of the Livestock sector. If farmers do not have proper training in animal health, they will not be able to recognize common endemic diseases nor understand disease prevention and control through proper use of vaccinations. Equally important is the knowledge of proper storage and hygienic practices when using vaccines and antibiotics. The lack of proper diagnostic veterinary laboratories, effective governmental veterinary services, and ineffective and expensive private veterinary services can lead to both the deterioration of animal health and low productivity of animals. This can also result in poor quality animal sourced products such as milk and meat. As a result, farmers lose substantial potential profits contributing to decreased farmers’ income.
Indiscriminate use of antibiotics without a proper disease diagnosis can result in contaminated milk and meat and ultimately result in antibiotic resistance and related health problems in animals and humans.
Dr. Mushtaq Memon at We-Empower Inc., has conducted similar projects in several countries in the world, helping projects and animal owners to increase profitability, and at the same time producing wholesome milk and meat for human consumption.
