Bitter Harvest: Pesticides Uncensored

Bitter Harvest is a 3-part documentary series produced by Africa Uncensored in which they highlight the impact of pesticides on food production in Kenya.

In an era dominated by our quest to improve food security amid unpredictable changes due to climate change, pesticides are usually seen as necessary with their ill-effects considered as minor inconveniences.

Bitter Harvest looks at the pesticide industry and its impact on select farmers. In addition, the documentary highlights some flaws in regulating the influx of pesticides into Kenya and the lacking capacity that exists among those who apply pesticides.

Our commitment to Pesticide Issues

The challenge of pesticide use in a developing nation is a mystery to most people and yet the impact of pesticide use is seen as an unfolding crisis.

At We-Empower Inc., we understand how pesticide use in an environment of limited capacities and little regulation can be devastating to vulnerable populations in developing nations (https://www.agrilinks.org/post/synthetic-pesticides-africa-good-bad-and-ugly)

Rural farmers who produce 80% of the country’s food supply, women who do most of the work, and children are at most risk when pesticides are applied.

Our Integrated Pest Management sector together with our food security, vocational training and women empowerment divisions actively seek to address these sensitive matters to help prevent future pesticide-related problems.
